NEW CLASSES

Art of the Gilded Age: The Splendid Years (6 sessions)
The Civil War did not have a disastrous effect on American culture. The euphoria generated by peace, the renewed vitality of the Union, and in the North, victory, fostered the illusion of national continuity. After years of isolation the Arts turned once again to Europe and younger artists began to go abroad - particularly to Paris and Munich - to complete their education. This series of slide lectures will look at six artists ( Whistler, Cassatt, Sargent, Homer, Eakins and Johnson ) that exemplify this period.
