Spanish

….The Spanish program has many levels with several instructors. Books used are Curso Primero and Curso Segundo (revised 2nd edition). Lecturas Avanzadas is used for the advanced conversation classes. The goal of the traditional classes is for the student to learn the grammar needed to understand and speak Spanish, while Survival Spanish and Spanish for Travelers focuses on basic phrases and conversation. Textbooks are required for the Spanish classes.

Everyday Spanish (8 weeks)
This course is designed for students who have no previous background in Spanish. Learn a very basic knowledge of grammar, pronunciation, listening, and reading comprehension. Focus is on Spanish vocabulary and phrases pertaining to everyday activities in various settings. Have fun learning Spanish in a relaxing environment. Textbook is required.

Survival Spanish, Level I I (8 sessions)
Want to learn Spanish with no grammatical structures to battle through; just correct standard Spanish pronunciation and lots of short, easy to learn and verbalize phrases? Learn basic communication strategies needed in the most routine daily exchanges, i.e., greetings, goodbyes, numbers, days, directions, emergency expressions, Latin food, drink, holidays, and much more. PowerPoint presentations, role-playing parts and team challenges make this a very interactive class that includes cross-cultural information on unique aspects of the rich and colorful Latino culture. The manual with audio CDs is available at the ACEC office

Survival Spanish, Level II (8 sessions)
This class is more inclusive than Level I. Spend the first hour expanding on the communication strategies with the use of PowerPoint presentations and verbal practice. During the second hour, practice what you learned in the first hour by concentrating on interactive role-playing situations and a lot of oral practice. Team competitions show how fast you can remember English phrases in Spanish. The same manual with audio CD's is used as in level I. Prerequisite: Level I Survival Spanish, other level of Spanish or instructor approval.

Survival Spanish, Everyday Conversation (8 sessions)
Begin with a review of correct pronunciation, vowels, diphthongs, rules of stress, etc. Practice listening comprehension exercises beginning with CD #2. This class is more inclusive than level I. Spend the first hour expanding on the communication strategies with the use of PowerPoint presentations and verbal practice. During the second hour, practice what you learned in the first hour by concentrating on interactive role-playing situations and oral practice. Spend one class at an authentic Mexcian Restaurant. The same manual with audio CD's is used as in Level I. Prerequisite: Level I Survival Spanish or similar course or instructor approval.

Survival Spanish, Lunch with Senor Mike (4 sessions) NEW
Meet in the classroom for the first session to review topic, vocabulary and theme: for example: travel, taking a cruise to Spanish speaking ports; airports, customs, transportation needs and hotel theme, food themes, emergency Spanish (calling 911 in foreign country and handling simple Q & A), etc. Review local menus and discover the rich culinary traditions before experiencing the actual flavors. Students are responsible for their own purchases. 1st week, meet in portable and bring your own lunch. Go over the itinerary. Each week after, meet at a restaurant.

Spanish I (9 sessions)
Spanish I is designed for the student who has NO prior knowledge of Spanish and has not been exposed to the language. The objective is to master listening comprehension and basic communication skills. By learning vocabulary, word order, the sound system, and the fundamentals of grammar, students begin to communicate. Conversations include culture, customs, history, and traditions to enable the student to understand the background of the language. Emphasis is on listening and speaking.

Spanish II (9 sessions)
This course is designed for the student who has a basic beginner's knowledge of Spanish or as a continuation of Spanish I. Students should be able to understand basic sentence structure, complete declarative and interrogative sentences, and conjugate present tense verbs including "ser" and "estar", as well as irregular present tense. Students with little Spanish background may find this course difficult.

Spanish III (9 sessions)
This course is designed for students who would like to continue improving knowledge of basic Spanish grammar and increase oral comprehension and communication. Students taking this class should know how to use the present, preterite and future tenses in Spanish or should have completed Spanish II. Students should be able to speak and understand basic, daily Spanish. Spanish is spoken most of the time.

Spanish, Intermediate(9 sessions)
This course is designed for students who finished Spanish I, II and III and want to improve their grammar and conversational skills. Students need to know the use of the present, fugure, preterite and imperfect tenses as well as the perfect tense, and also understand the use of Gustar and other special verbs. Students are expected to be able to express themselves in Spanish using the different tenses and understand easy conversations, readings and stories. Improve vocabulary, conversation and comprehension skills. Students are further expected to write and read in Spanish and to speak more extemporaneously. Spanish is spoken most of the time in order to prepare for the more advanced classes where ONLY Spanish is spoken. Instructor approval is required for new students.

This class is designed for students who have completed Spanish, Intermediate and want to master all areas of Spanish grammar before going into Spanish Advanced Conversation, and for those who want to refresh grammar skills.  If student cannot have a conversation in Spanish using the correct tenses and conjugations as well as a good level of comprehension, this class is NOT for you. ONLY SPANISH IS SPOKEN IN THIS CLASS.  Instructor approval is required for any new student.

Spanish, Advanced Conversation (9 sessions)
A perfect class for the student who has completed Spanish VI and VII or for those who have traveled extensively or perhaps have lived in a Spanish speaking country. Increase reading and oral proficiency as you practice and improve your knowledge of the language in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Expand your understanding as we learn valuable information on many different aspects of Spanish culture. Discuss today's news in Spanish speaking countries and the USA and learn about Spanish writers and their works. ONLY SPANISH IS SPOKEN IN THIS CLASS.
